If you’ve read the Clarice Bean books by Lauren Child, you’ll know that Ruby Redfort is Clarice Bean’s favourite book character. She’s a super brainy genius with terrible eyesight and loves to wear t-shirts with slogans like ‘What a total yawn’ and ‘Bored beyond belief.’ In Look Into My Eyes, we find out how Ruby got started as a secret agent.
Ruby Redfort lives her life by a set of rules, like Rule 1: You can never be completely sure what might happen next, or Rule 7: Never forget the little things – it’s the little things that will lead people to notice the big things. When a mysterious stranger calls Ruby and sets her a challenge, her rules help her to solve the puzzle. It’s not long before she finds her way into the HQ of the most secret of secret agencies – SPECTRUM. After sitting SPECTRUM’s Agency Test, Ruby is put to work solving a code that one their agents failed to solve before she died in an avalanche. The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she finds herself in. Ruby has grabbed the attention of some of the world’s most evil villains and crooks, but will SPECTRUM be able to save her before it’s too late.
Ruby Redfort: Look Into My Eyes has got me hooked on Ruby Redfort and her adventures. Ruby Redfort is a very cool character and the sort of girl that everyone would like. She’s smart, fearless, funny and isn’t afraid to stand out from the crowd. She has quite an old-fashioned way of talking (she calls people buster and bozo), but that’s something I really like about her character and it makes her stand out. The way that Ruby answers the phone made me crack up every time. Ruby’s butler (or household manager as he like to be called), Hitch is one of the coolest butlers ever! He’s very mysterious when you first meet him, but he’s always there when the Redforts need him. Apart from Hitch, alot of the adults in the book are boring, stupid and just interested in themselves and their parties. I was wondering how a girl as smart and full of personality as Ruby had such dull parents.
If you love books full of mystery, with kids who are secret agents, and evil villains who want to commit the crime of the century, then Ruby Redfort: Look Into My Eyes is the book for you. As Clarice Bean says, ‘you will literally be on the edge of your wits.’ Recommended for 9+ 10 out of 10
It’s been five months since Alex heard from MI6. He doesn’t know if Mrs Jones has finally persuaded Alan Blunt not to use teenagers on missions, or they just don’t need him at the moment. In need of answers, Alex goes to MI6, they would know what this was all about. But he comes out scheduled for another mission. This time Alex must travel to Cairo, to spy on a head of security of a school for they worlds richest kids. Although everything is not as it seems.
I really can’t give any more away for this book, it would ruin the whole story. But I can tell you this is one of the best Anthony Horowitz books yet. It’s fast paced, and you can’t predict what will happen next, as all of the Alex Rider books are full of clever twists and the plan only becomes clear at the very end.
The 9th and final Alex Rider adventure by Anthony Horowitz, Scorpia Rising is out now. Place a hold at one of our libraries that are open or online using your library card number and PIN. If you don’t have a PIN, phone us on 941-7923.
Will you read the last Alex Rider book? We want to know if he’s still one of your favourite characters.
James Choke was a normal kid. He went to school, hung out with friends, and did his homework (most of the time). But some members of his family are definitely not normal. Ron (his stepdad) has big anger problems. And for his mum, she runs a massive thieving business. Because of this, James has everything he wants: Playstation 2, big flat screen TV, DVD player, the works.
One day at school, Samantha Jennings ( a mean girl who James hates), continues to taunt him about having an extremely overweight mum. Then, he decides he’s had enough. He violently assaults Samantha and flees the classroom.
At home that night, James’s mum and Ron are drinking wine. While Ron sneakily steals money from her wallet, James reminds his mum that she needs to take her pills and she isn’t supposed to drink without them. Later on, when Ron has left, James tries to wake his mother up. She doesn’t move. He checks her breathing. Nothing.
James’s sister Lauren is taken away from him to live with Ron, while he moves into Nebraska House. He lives there for a few weeks with his roommate, Kyle. But in almost no time, he finds himself on CHERUB Campus, an unofficial branch of the British intelligence. Before he can stop the bad guys and be miniature 007, he has to pass basic training. 100 days of pure torture, lead by stone-hearted, Mr Large.
CHERUB is probably in the top three series I’ve read. If you like Alex Rider you’ll love CHERUB. I would recommend it for people who like long series (don’t you hate it when you read a really good book and there’s no sequel?!?!). I give it 9/10
In this book, James, the main Character, goes on a trip to Sicily but ends up Going to his cousins place. Then he gets captured and escapes but gets recaptured again and gets very close to death that is caused by mosqitos.
Tripwire is a book by Steve Cole and bomb disposal expert Chris Hunter.
DAY ZERO-THE MOST HORRIFIC TERROR ATTACK IN HISTORY-HAS CHANGED THE WORLD FOREVER…THE RULEBOOK’S JUST BEEN RE-WRITTEN.
Felix Smith is a fifteen year old boy-he also works for The Minos Chapter. The Minos Chapter is a group of 15 years+ agents working to stop terrorist attacks. Felix has been trained in tactics, firearms, physical fitness, advanced driving, covert entry techniques, military freefall parachuting and much more… He’s also a bomb disposal expert. Sent on a mission Felix must make the most important decision of his life. 3 seconds. 2 wires. 1 choice. Heads you live… tails you die. If this was a movie it would be rated PG or M due to violence and bad language. I’d give it an 9/10 and reccomend it for 11/12+.
Role: Entering battlespaces to disable improvised explosive devices (IEPs).
Training: tactics, firearms, physical fitness, advanced driving, military free fall parachuting, boat-handling and vehicle hot-wiring.
Tripwire by Steve Cole and Chris Hunter (a bomb disposal expert) is the explosive first book in thrilling new series. Felix’s father was killed along with thousands of others in the Day Zero attacks, a series of terrorist attacks that destroyed London’s Heathrow Airport. Felix wants nothing more than to fight back and stop the vicious terrorist organisation, Orpheus, from spreading their destruction. He’s recruited by a top-secret organization called the Minos Chapter and sent to gather intelligence on the terrorists. Felix has the skills but can he discover their plans and diffuse their bombs in time?
The excitement and suspense keeps you reading and the chapters count down from 27 seconds so you know something big is going to happen at the end. I found myself almost sweating along with Felix as he tried to defuse the bombs, taking them apart bit by bit.
The CHERUB series by Robert Muchamore is a fantastic read. It has action, adventure and a little bit of romance. I recommend these books to competent readers 12+. I rate this series 9 1/2 out of 10.Its a good read.
Duty: Operate as a Human Data-Collecting Device (HD-CD)
Directive: Spy on the past.
Battle Boy is a new series of books, written by Charlie Carter, about BB005 who gets sent back in time to spy on some of the greatest battles in history. Equipped with some cool gadgets and top-secret information, Napoleon must go back in time and set the record straight. If you like spy stories, history stories or adventure stories these books are for you. They’re also great if you’ve read all of the Zac Power books and you’re looking for something else to read.
