Department 19 is a book about vampires, werewolves and all the supernatural creatures that live in the dark. These are no sparkly vampires though, they’re vicious, blood-suckers who you don’t want to bump into in the dark.
When Jamie Carpenter’s mother is kidnapped one night by strange creatures, he is suddenly dragged into a world he didn’t know existed. He’s recruited by Department 19, a secret government department that protects the world against the supernatural, including werewolves and some extremely dangerous and powerful vampires. Jamie is taken under the wing of one of Department 19′s top agents, Frankenstein, and helps introduce him to the skills and weapons that he’ll need to get his mother back and kill the vampires who want him dead.
Department 19 is the first book in a fantastically gory, action-packed new series. There is enough blood and guts throughout the book to keep you hooked and the ending leaves you craving for more. My favourite thing about Department 19 was that there were flash backs to other times and places that told you how and why the Department was formed, as well as giving you some background about the families involved. I loved all the characters, from Jamie who is coming to terms with his family’s past, to the teenage vampire girl, Larissa, and all of the vampires in between. My favourite character had to be Frankenstein because of his loyalty to Jamie’s family. I thought it was awesome to have a monster like him as part of a secret government agency. The next book will probably include both Frankenstein and Dracula so the series can only get better. If you like books by Derek Landy, Darren Shan and Joseph Delaney, you’ll love Department 19 by Will Hill. Recommended for 12 + 10 out of 10
Olivia is just a new girl ar school who tries to fit in with everybody else. Then she meets this girl named Ivy Vega. She was a goth – seriously. Ivy and Olivia had something in common and do you know what that is? They’re twins! But then Ivy told Olivia about how she was a vampire and this was one of the “vampire breaking rules” so she felt all guilty. How can she keep this as a secret? I’ll give you some advice – read the book.
Caution= this book would be better for girls. Trust me boys!
Be amazed by all the things you can find in the night.

This ends up being one of the best literary roller-coasters ever.
I give this a ten out of ten and recommend it for ages nine up.
One of the books that I’ve been reading through our earthquake crisis is Derek Landy’s latest Skulduggery Pleasant book, Mortal Coil. We’ve seen Skulduggery and his butt-kicking companion, Valkyrie, fighting all sorts of evil so far, but Mortal Coil has even more in store for them. As I was reading I kept wondering ‘how the heck are they going to get out of this situation?’
In the last book, Dark Days, Valkyrie found out a terrible secret that she couldn’t bear to tell Skulduggery. In Mortal Coil she is doing all she can to try to change her terrible destiny, without the help of Skulduggery. If that wasn’t enough to deal with, the Remnants have escaped the Midnight Hotel and foreign powers are threatening to take over the Irish Sanctuary. The Remnants believe that Valkyrie is their saviour and will possess any body to get to her. Will Skulduggery be able to save the day this time?
I loved Mortal Coil! As always, the story is fast-paced, the characters (and their names) are interesting, the humour is witty, and it’s scary and pretty gory in parts. Derek Landy can make me laugh or make my skin crawl (sometimes in the same sentence). If you’ve read the other Skulduggery books you’ll love Mortal Coil, but if you haven’t read them yet, get them from the library. Age 10+ 10 out of 10
