Writing book reviews
Here are some tips on writing book reviews for the Christchurch kids blog.
Fiction
When you are writing a fiction book review for the blog, these are some points that you should include:
- Title and Author — Make sure you include the title and the author of the book. This will help people find the book in the catalogue and read it themselves.
- Plot — This is what happens in the book. Tell your audience a little bit about what happens in the book. Does the story sound exciting and believable? Is it a story that you can get lost in?
- Characters — Describe some of the characters in the book. You could write about who your favourite character was, and why. Are the characters believable? Are you interested in finding out what happens to them?
- Highlights — You could describe your favourite part of the book. Was there a particular piece of action, description, or character’s speech you really enjoyed?
- Opinion – How many marks out of 10 would you give the book? What age do you think would enjoy it the most? Does it suit boys or girls better?
You could also choose one of these sentence starters and write 3-4 sentences:
- The story took place in…This was important to the story…
- I like/disliked it when…because…
- The character of…changed by the end of the story…
- An important decision made by the main character was…
- A problem the main character had was…
- This book made me think about…
- From reading the book I learned…
- The title of the story was important…
- An exciting/sad/tense/interesting/important part of the book was…
Keep these tips in mind:
- Be detailed – Tell us what you liked or didn’t like. What made it special?
- Be accurate – Make sure to get the title, author and character names right, and make sure you double check your spelling and punctuation.
- Don’t spoil it – Please don’t give away the ending! Tell readers enough about the book to get them interested, but keep them hanging so they want to read the book.
Here is a sample that you could use:
Title of book:
A book that I have just read is _____________(title) by______________(author).
I liked it because…
My favourite character was…
My favourite part of the book was…
I would recommend it for…
I give it ______ marks out of 10
Non-fiction
If you are reviewing a non-fiction book that you’ve read, your review will look slightly different:
- Title and Author
- Subject – write a sentence or two about the subject of the book you’re reviewing.
- Summary – tell the audience, in your own words, about what the author had to say about the subject. Pick the most important points.
- Opinion – express your thoughts about the book. What was the most interesting thing you learned about the book’s subject? Was the information clear?
If you have any questions about the blog, are not sure how to do something, or need to report a problem, you can email us at christchurchkidsblog@ccc.govt.nz

But I don’t know what to call it, what shall I name the kids?
I really need some help with this book I’m writing, then I’ll give it to Libby she’ll take it to her aunt, she might publish it. If not Libby will give it back to me then I’ll read it through, and fix it up…Clear?

My Sister Jodie by Jacqueline Wilson
My sister Jodie is a unique book.It tells the tale of two sisters who are forced to go to a posh school.Their lives are instantly changed and they have to lead their own lives without the help of their parents.Jodie needs Pearl but Pearl doesn’t need Jodie anymore. When Jodie tries to reveal a new found secret, things go badly wrong and Pearl realises that maybe her big sister was needed more than she thought.

Her dad lost his job. She had always wanted to go to college, but her family couldn’t afford it. Their grand-mother won’t pay for it [she's rich.]

Hi Zac,
I Love Nanny Piggins and the rival ringmaster book it is so cool.
I read a bit each night it kept you reading it, sometimes i read a bit overtime so not to much sleep for me those nights.
There are 10 chapters but the chapters are a whole new story!! (don’t worry at the end it all weaves together
The story is 281 pages, at the back there are little blurbes from the other books.
In book 5 of her enthrilling adventures Nanny Piggins discovers some startling truths about the ruthless ringmaster, provides counselling to a Molavadinian princess with pre-wedding jitters, inadvertently wins a Nobel Prize while impersonating her identical sister and catches up with her favourate 4-tonne friend, Esmeralda the forgetful Elephant!!!
Excellent book AAA+++++ 10 out of 10 !!! 8)
Reommended to kids 10-13
i am only 9 but my dad helped me!!
P..s she is the most dangerous pig to put on a leotard.
Also Amy ( i think she is a star blooger she wrote about the keeper) got me this book for my b-day
p.s again Zac can i enter some comps for Nanny Piggins or other books ( i really like club penguin and moshi monsters)

Book Review

Title: Hugo Pepper
Author: Paul Stewart
Hugo Pepper is a 12 year old boy who lives in the Frozen North. His parents, Phineas and Phyllida Pepper, were eaten by polarbears when he was 1, so Harvi and Sarvi Runter-Tun-Tun took him in and raised him as their own. Harvi and Sarvi are simple reindeer herders who leave gifts out for “the snowgiants”, and as Hugo gets older he helps them with the reindeer. One summer, Hugo was looking around the milking shed when he came upon a battered sled, the sled that his parents had arrived in the Frozen North on. With teary good-byes from Harvi and Sarvi, Hugo took off in the sled to Firefly Square, where his parents used to live. He makes friends with the occupants of Firefly Square, and ends up ridding them of a nasty magazine editor who continues to write horrible things about them.
This book is a great read for ages 9-13 because it uses descriptive language and the storyline is easy to follow. I couldn’t put it down, I had to keep reading because Paul Stewart made each chapter close with a hint of mystery, which leaves the reader longing to read on.
There are several illustrations in this book, which I found good because you could use the illustrations as templates for what you imagine the characters to look like.
Paul Stewart is also the author of The Edge Chronicles, another set of books well worth reading.

Hi Eveyone
,
OUT OF MY DEPTH
So i guess most of you have never heard or even read about this book but its a really good book to read in your spare time as i do.
Now just to tell you if you were to read the beginning 2 maybe 3 pages you would think yuck how disscustning, but in fact as it is how disguting it is it’s actally part of life. If you are to read this book i would personly reccomend this book to a girl as like i said if you read he first 2 maybe 3 pages you may yuck as its more to do with girly growing up things. Like i said i reccomend this to girls is because of the girly features such as e.g if your mum and dad split up and your mum meets a another guy it tell you how to get reid of them (But don’t try it.)
Also there are lads of quotes and some i am going to tell you about such as:
This book is a great way to help me through my life espeacilly consdiring some of this has happend to me.
I like this book because its funny.
Finally …… I enjoyed this book because reading this book made me relise how much i love both my dads.
So there you have it….. A book reiveiw on OUT OF MY DEPTH
More to come with the series.

Title: Amazon Adventure
Author: Willard Price
This book is about two boys called Hal and Roger and their dad who set out in the Amazon to look look for rare and exciting but also dangerous animals to put in the zoo they run.
From time to time they get into trouble and soon they hear that the zoo and their house burned down because of a fire. Their father has to leave so he can help with the house that means Hal and Roger are left alone to tackle some of the biggest and most dangerous species in the world…
Roger is 14 and very funny and cheeky at times but Hal, well Hal is quite different. He is serious, thoughtful, kind but sometimes he does have quite a sense of humour.
I would give these series 10/10 they are so good. I think children ages 7 or over would enjoy these books so if you’re 7 or over and you like adventure books then you’d better get reading!
