Reckless by Cornelia Funke

Cornelia Funke is one of my favourite authors and I always love her books.   My favourite children’s book is Inkheart and if you love books I’m sure it will be one of your favourites too.  Her new book is called Reckless and it’s fantastic.

Reckless is set in a magical, fairytale world behind a mirror and it tells the story of two brothers called Jacob and Will Reckless.   Jacob prefers the world behind the mirror, where he goes on quests to find magical objects for the Empress, while Will prefers to live in the real world.  While he is in the Mirrorworld, Will is attacked by the Goyl, a race of stone people who are slowly taking over.  Because of the Dark Fairy’s curse, Will is slowly turning to stone and transforming into a Goyl.  Can Jacob stop Will’s transformation before it’s too late?

Cornelia Funke has created a world filled with all sorts of fairytale creatures.  You can recognise creatures and objects from other fairytales, like Cinderella’s glass slipper and Rapunzel’s hair.   Reckless is a bit darker than Cornelia Funke’s other books but just as good.  If you like Cornelia Funke’s writing or you just like a great fantasy story, try Reckless.

I really hope she writes another book in the Mirrorworld because I want to go back there. I haven’t been able to find out if it is the start of a new series or just a stand-alone book. The ending leaves it open for another one though.
