Hetty Feather

‘Hetty Feather’ is written by Jacqueline Wilson and illustrated by Nick Sharratt.  ‘Hetty Feather’ is a historical fiction novel set in London in 1876.

Hetty Feather is just a tiny baby when her desperate mother leaves her at a foundling hospital.  The hospital cares for children whose mothers are so poor that they can’t look after them.  For the first six year of her life Hetty is sent to live in a foster home where she be-friends her foster brother Jem.  Hetty is very happy at her foster home and never dreams that she might have to go back to the foundling hospital.  Hetty struggles under the strict rules of the hospital and ends up running away in search of her mother….

This book is written from Hetty’s point of view, which makes you feel like you are there along side her experiencing her adventures.  Hetty has many sides to her personality – she is feisty and determined.  I think this book is suitable for 9 to 12 year olds.  I would give this book a rating of 9 out of 10.
