Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins

When Gregor falls down a laundry grate, he tumbles into a bizarre land underneath the city. He and his sister, Boots, are taken to the city of Regalia, where they meet talking bats, giant roaches, and the Underlanders, a race of pale-skinned humans.  All Gregor wants is to return to New York City, but he finds out about a prophecy referring to him as the “warrior”, and embarks on a quest to find the thing he and his family have needed back for several years.  He still doesn’t know, though, how much his journey will change him and the Underland, forever.

This book is Book One in the Underland Chronicles, which consist of five books altogether. These books are my all-time favourite, and I think that they’re as well-written as Harry Potter.  My favourite character is Ripred the rat, who is a spy for the humans, instead of the beast everyone thinks he is.  If I had to choose my favourite book, I would choose the last book, even though they are all very good. Some people don’t read this book, because they are discouraged by the beginning, because of the little sister’s baby talk.  I agree that this is a little bit distracting, but please, if you read it, don’t stop reading.

I think 9 to 13-year-olds would like this book, especially those who enjoy adventure books and comedy. I give it a 10 out of 10.

Great review! I was hoping someone would review this series for me as I had not got around to reading it. After the superb Hunger Games by the same author, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Thanks again. 🙂
