Skulduggery Pleasant

Over the Summer holidays the Library had a Summer Reading Film Competition. It was aimed at teenagers but one of the entries was a great book trailer for Skulduggery Pleasant.

Skulduggery Pleasant is a very popular series about a girl who discovers her dead Uncle, who she thought was a horror fiction writer, actually was telling true stories about his battle against evil. The eighth book in the series, Last stand of dead men, has just been released, but if you’d like to start from the start, you can check out the full series on our catalogue.

The author of Skulduggery Pleasant, Derek Landry, visited Christchurch in 2012 and we interviewed him on our blog. We’ve got a lot of other great articles and videos about the Skulduggery Pleasant series on our blog too.

Heroes of Olympus: The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea’s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?

They have no choice. If the demigods don’t succeed, Gaea’s armies will never die.
They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood.

The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

The House of Hades, the conclusion to the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan, is due out next month.  Reserve your copy from the library now.

John Flanagan’s new series, Brotherband

John Flanagan’s Ranger’s Apprentice series is coming to an end but you can look forward to his new series, Brotherband.   The first book is called The Outcasts and is due out on November 1.  Here’s the blurb:

“In Skandia, there is only one way to become a warrior. Boys are chosen for teams called brotherbands and must endure three months of gruelling training in seamanship, weapons and battle tactics. It’s brotherband against brotherband, fighting it out in a series of challenges. There can be only one winner.

When Hal Mikkelson finds himself the unwilling leader of a brotherband made up of outcasts, he must step up to the challenge. The Heron brotherband might not have the strength and numbers of the other two teams, but with inventiveness, ingenuity and courage on their side, they might just surprise everyone.”

Countdown to Skulduggery Pleasant: Death Bringer

Skulduggery Pleasant is one of my favourite book characters and I always look forward to his latest battle against the forces of evil.  Luckily I only have to wait a few more weeks as the sixth book, Death Bringer is due out in New Zealand on September 1.  I can’t wait to be reunited with Skulduggery, Valkyrie, Ghastly and Tanith.

If you haven’t read any of the Skulduggery Pleasant books by Derek Landy I highly recommend them.  They’re filled with action, mystery, thrills, chills, brilliant characters and perfectly-timed humour.  If you want a taste of this awesome series, here’s the book trailer:

You can reserve your copy of Death Bringer at your local library now.

Keep your eye on the blog for your chance to WIN a copy of Death Bringer!
