Books into movies – what’s your favourite?

There have been heaps of children’s books made into movies.  Some of the movies are really good – the actors playing the characters are exactly as you pictured them and they stick to the story.  Others are really bad and the story has been changed so much that it’s completely different from the book.  Some of my favourite movies based on books are:

Throughout the Summertime Reading Club we’re going to be highlighting some of the great movies that are coming out these holidays.  You may have noticed that there are lots of movies based on books – Hugo (The Invention of Hugo Cabret), The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, and War Horse (based on the book by Michael Morpurgo).  We’ll be having lots of exciting giveaways where you can win copies of the books and movie passes.

Our first competition, starting Friday, is all about Tintin, so keep your eyes peeled!

Horrid Henry in 3D

Here’s the first look at the Horrid Henry movie in 3D that is coming out later this year.  It looks hilarious and the cast looks amazing.  While you wait for the movie you could read all about Horrid Henry’s antics in his books that we have in the library or watch the cartoon series that we have on DVD.

What’s your favourite Horrid Henry story?

Read the book, watch the movie

Find Inkheart in the library catalogueThere have been plenty of kids books that have been made into movies lately, including Where the Wild Things Are, Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief, Alice in Wonderland and Coraline.  Some of them are great adaptations of the books we love and some really suck and they change the story so much that it’s not what you remember.

My favourite children’s book is Inkheart and it’s such a great story with beautiful language and fantastic characters.  The movie though is really, really bad.  Brendan Fraser is definitely not what I pictured Meggie’s father, Mo to look like at all, Capricorn and Basta don’t look evil enough, and they completely changed the story.

What’s your favourite movie version of a book?  We have a cool page on our Kids website that lists children’s books that have been made into movies.  Check it out next time you need a movie to watch.
